Writing Routines

I recently stumbled across this blog and was fascinated by the routines of several famous authors.

This got me thinking about my own routines and how important they are to my writing time. My alarm goes off at 5am. I have the nicest husband in the world who doesn’t complain when I hit snooze a couple of times. Next, I get out of bed, brush my teeth, put in eye drops to keep my eyes open, and make a cup of coffee. I sit in this chair with a warm blanket and my notebook or laptop and write until I have to get ready for work or until my son wakes up.

A few months ago, Jody Hedlund wrote a great blog post about how to establish your own writing routines.

What are some of your routines?

  1. That looks like a very comfy chair to look forward to in the mornings! I was much more disciplined in my writing routine when I was taking writing classes. For me, journaling 1 hour in the morning to keep my writing muscles strong, and then blocks of time on the weekends to write works best.

  2. Hi, Julie.
Sadly, my routine goes like this: up at 3:00 am, in the office by 4:00 am, work the day-job until about 3:00 pm, go to bed by 8:30 pm and do it all again.
This gives me precious little time to do much writing; however, somehow I manage to keep up with two-three different blogs and write the articles I do for a local on-line magazine. I stay connected to everything by trusty iPhone. Soon the edits will come back for my second novel and I'll have to clear some space for that. Stay Tuned! Lol!
    Thanks for the post.
    Take care,

    -Jimmy

  3. Mine is catch as catch can since I have such an erratic schedule. The trick is making sure that whenever the opportunity presents itself, I just start writing.

  4. Hi Julie!
Unfortunately, I don't have a set writing routine. That's probably why I don't get as much writing done as I would like to. I'm still searching for the perfect routine that I can stick to. :)

  5. FIVE Am? Darn. I just posted on this very subject today and my struggle and I though 6 Am was an early goal. :P LOL

  6. I love this chair! Maybe in my next house, I'll get one! :)

Good job being so disciplined with your writing routine! I usually stay in bed until my kids wake up, which is normally around 6:45. I've got to have my sleep in order to keep up with them during the day! My writing usually happens at night once they are asleep.

  7. I am amazed at the level of dedication that it takes to wake up at 5 every morning like you do.

I really like it because once you are up I have you as my alarm clock. You inspire me to wake up and workout every single day because I know if you got up that early it wouldn't be fair for me to sleep in. Actually, it would be just plain mean.
